Seven Most Frequent Reasons For Miscarriage

Post 14

The case of loosing pregnancy is so frequent that obstetricians find it as normal part of reproduction. This doesn’t ease abortion. Find out which are the seven most common reasons and how to increase your chances for healthy pregnancy.

Example case:

Several months after having my first baby I wanted another. I wanted my children to be close by age and when my first child had only 13 months I was pregnant again. But even before I had the chance to tell my husband (who was abroad) I had a miscarriage and I was pregnant for only 5 weeks. I have to admit that if we were not trying to have second child I wouldn’t even notice that my period is late. I was surprised how harsh I experienced this loss. I was not even comforted when my gynecologist told me that 15% from pregnancies end up with miscarriage. I was not comforted even later when he told me that the miscarriage was not my fault and that it happened naturally. But I felt relieved when he told me that you may experience miscarriage only once. If you had a miscarriage you probably want to know why that happened and what you may do in order to prevent it. If you were pregnant once the chances for having a healthy second child are high up to 80%! Accept the fact that you will never find out why you had a miscarriage. In many cases the miscarriage is isolated event and the actual case can never be found out. Women who have 2 or 3 miscarriages will get it that they have medical problems that interrupt pregnancy but in half of the cases the reason will never be discovered.

This is a short review on the most frequent causes for single and multiple miscarriages.

Reason for miscarriage: chromosome abnormality

Why this leads to miscarriage?

Not having equality between the chromosomes is a reason why 60% of pregnancies end up with abortion. The chromosomes are small structures in every cell which carry our genes. Each of it has 23 pairs of chromosomes (11 of the mother and one of the father). Sometimes when the ovum and sperm will meet one of them is not in a good shape. Due to this the chromosomes are not able to order properly. In that case the fetus has chromosome abnormality and it lead to interruption of the pregnancy.

What you may do?

If you already had an abortion you have to remain patient. There are great chances that you will be able to give birth to another healthy baby. If you have an abortion again try to preserve part from the tissue which will come out from you (if it’s possible put it in a liquid which is used for preservation of eye contacts) and bring it to your doctor in order to make laboratory research. If there is normal chromosome order, than you should start looking for other reasons which led to abortion and start with treatment.

Reason for miscarriage: uterus abnormalities and irregular cervix

Why this leads to miscarriage?

If your uterus in not in the normal shape, abortion happens because the fetus cannot plant or when it plants it can’t get the food that it needs to survive. Uterus abnormalities are causing abortion in 10% of the cases. Weakened or irregular cervix is on more problem that may lead to abortion because at the end of the first third of pregnancy the fetus is big enough so the cervix starts growing. It the cervix is weakened it can’t hold the fetus in the uterus.

What you may do?

If your doctor can’t find out about this problem until you experience multiple miscarriages or your pregnancy is in developed vase. The good news is that the septum (wall) of the uterus can undergo a surgical correction. If you have an irregular cervix the doctor may sew it up to hold it closed. You may ask to delay pregnancy or to stay in hospital during whole pregnancy.

Reason for miscarriage: Disorder of the immune system

Why it comes to miscarriage?

Women’s body treats sperm as foreign body and this is why pregnancy is considered to be a miracle. Most of the time the fertilized oval send signals to the mother saying “does not treat me as bacteria” and the pregnancy may continue without any problems. In some cases woman’s body will not accept the fetus. Anti phospholipids antibodies (antibodies that attack its own tissue including the fetus) are reason for many miscarriages for which doctors say that they cannot be explained.

What you may do?

This sphere has been researched many times. The recommended treatments are still seen as experiments but treatments with aspirin, heparin (it prevents blood coagulation) and some steroids have shown success (do not try this without doctor’s recommendation).

Reason for miscarriage: untreated illnesses such as problems with thyroid and uncontrolled diabetes.

Why this leads to miscarriage?

Problems with the thyroid and the uncontrolled diabetes are related to unsuitable environment in the uterus. The effects of this case cause difficulties in survival of the fetus.

What you may do?

Make changes into your living style as recommended by the doctor and do every treatment that may control your diabetes. Problems with the thyroid are usually controlled with medicaments.

Reason for miscarriage: Polycystic syndrome of the ovarian

Why this leads to miscarriage?

This is a sudden reason for multiply abortions. This women have high levels of male hormone – testosterone which causes irregular ovulation and menstruation. Even women that don’t have diabetes because they have polycystic ovarian are resistant to insulin which prevents the mat to develop properly. It is considered that 5 to 10% of the female adults have this syndrome.

What you may do?

There is certain improvement if the patient uses oral anti diabetes medications.

Reason for miscarriage: Bacterial infections

Why this leads to abortion?

Many microorganisms may live without causing any harm (even they help sometimes) in male or female reproductive organs. But some bacteria may cause problems and to increase the risk of miscarriage. Especially two of them are very dangerous – Mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma urealyticum who live in male reproductive organs and may cause abortion. Once these bacteria get into female body they may cause infection on the placenta in the uterus and to disable proper development of the fetus. There are no symptoms so the only way to find out if your husband has this bacteria is to do a test.

What you may do

These infections are easily treated with antibiotics.

Reason for miscarriage: Personal life style (cigarettes, alcohol, medications, drugs, poisons from the environment)

Why it leads to miscarriage?

Nicotine makes small holes in the placenta and implicates blood flow and development of the fetus. Smokers have twice the rate of miscarriage compared to non-smokers. Drinking more than two drinks daily is related to abortion and taking drugs is madness. At the end, some women that work on farms operation theatres, dentists and clinic laboratory have greater rate for abortion from still unknown reasons.

What you may do?

Give up bad habits before becoming pregnant. If you think that you working place is not safe for you during your pregnancy talk to your doctor and do something about it.

Signs for abortion

During early pregnancy bloody spots are normal but if you feel period cramps or bleeding you are probably experiencing abortion and you need to pay a visit to your doctor immediately. He may decide to check the cervix. If it is wide spread that it is an abortion. If you experienced abortion previously there is probability that you would need medical treatment but in some cases you would need a medical intervention which is called curettage with which the fetus is removed from the uterus.
