Mothers Manual – Newborn’s Feces, Urine And Vomiting

Post 19-20

Everything that you ever wanted to know for the babies and something more.

Everything that came in it has to go out, but in babies world this saying gets new meaning. It may seem to you that the baby throes out more than it gets in and you will wonder whether there is something left for baby’s nutrition. Remain calm because your baby will not die from starvation. We will tell you that you check its diapers and consult with friend family and other parents about this, but there is no need for that.

Everyone that has experienced parenthood will gladly accept to advise you and to talk with you about the situation you are facing (to those that do not have this kind of experience you are not interesting). In mean time you need to know a few things:

First of all, the baby needs several days to get his metabolism working. If you are breastfeeding there will not be feces until the baby entirely assimilates the milk (between two and five day), so when it starts throwing feces out of his body expect to change his diaper 5 to 8 times daily. If you are in a hospital the hospital staff will observe the production, but when you go home five or more diapers will be normal for two or three days. After this the number will go up. If baby’s peeing becomes abundantly than you will have to pay visit to your pediatrician.

In this era of super absorbing diapers it is easy to tell that they are not wet too much. Our best advice is to get familiar with the texture of the diaper when it is dry and on the next check touch them just to see if their volume has increased. The gel inside the diaper increases in volume when it absorbs urine. The diaper gets heavier. If you are still not sure smell the diaper to see if you will feel the smell of urine (later you will deal with stronger smell). When you start changing the diapers if you still can’t be sure if it is time for changing put it back and wait for another hour and then check again.

There is no doubt that you heard that babies have feces that are liquid and with a color similar to the one of mustard. If you are breastfeeding, the milk digests for a week and then it is thrown away from the body. Right after this babies produce thick feces that are black which is called meconium (this may happen while you are in hospital so you may not notice). When mother’s milk or formula start circulating through babies organism the feces become brown and similar to paste. Babies who are feed with formula will continue to have feces like this (even though it may become harder and the color may vary) while babies who are feed with mother’s milk will have yellow feces with variations.

Next thing about feces is that maybe you will ask yourself how often you should expect feces. And again many babies that are feed with mother’s milk will have feces after every feeding. But this is not a rule for every baby. Definitely babies that are feed with formula may have faces very rare or once in several days.

This usually causes panic to the grandparents of the baby and they alarm the parents. Because babies make noises and blush when they throw feces out of the body this may lead to a problem with constipation. Make sure that the grandparents know that constipation is a rare contrition in cases with babies. As well as adults, babies are unique in this condition and you pediatrician may confirm this. Until you’re the feces of your baby are soft your baby is normal.

There is a myth which related to the level of iron in the formula. As you know, iron is very important for adults but this level mustn’t be very high. The same thing happens with babies so don’t feel the urge to react to that. Formula which contains high level of iron is good for the brain of the baby and it won’t get constipation. Not even nutrition additives which contain iron are bad for your baby. Don’t let be fooled!

The mouth is on the other side of the body and it serves for liquids but many babies vomit 10 to 12 times a day. Sometimes there a volcanic eruption, sometimes just a small leaking from the mouth.

Mothers usually say that they cannot decide whether to dress themselves or the baby first because the baby may vomit on her dress or to dress the baby first and the baby to vomit on its own clothes.

This makes mothers nervous even though pediatricians say that this is just a small discomfort.

According to science the most common reason for babies vomiting is that the muscle of the digestive track between the stomach and esophagus is still not formed entirely (unstable but till sixth month it will strengthen).

But most babies don’t mind vomiting and they lose less food than you think – usually the size of a normal soup spoon but because mother’s milk or the formula mix with different liquids it seems to you like a lot. Just have enough towels and clothes for changing especially if you go somewhere. (It’s a good idea to have spare clothes even for you).

To decrease vomiting try the following tactics:

  • Give the baby less food but more often
  • Do not force the baby to eat
  • After feeding it keep it in a straight position shortly to allow gravity to help him into digesting the food
  • Make him burp regularly
  • If you are feeding him with formula ask your pediatrician to recommend you some which is easy digestible.

Sometimes vomiting needs medical help. If you baby is irritated and it vomits a lot may it has problems with food digesting which is easily solved. But in case your baby vomits a lot (vomits a huge amount of food), has diarrhea, stomach swelling and not gaining weight maybe it comes to some allergy on the milk so you need to visit the doctor. Vomiting food and milk allergies are unusual but it may appear. If it vomits blood that is a sign for infection and yellow-green mucus indicates blockade so if you notice any of this you have to visit a doctor immediately.
